rdParticipantThe Pixies issued a new song called "Bam Thwok" on iTunes a year or so back. I like it. I think many people don’t but for $0.99 plus tax, it’s worth it.

stannerParticipantas has been said and quoted on this site…the DINOSAUR tour is a form of closure for these great guys as a band. they each have new forums/bands/record labels/ fans to express their own art. that is why they are only playing the old tunes and having a great time it seems…who really knows what will happen if the good times continue
and here is hoping the DVD that they seem to have in mind will make everybody real happy someday.

It’s one of the very few good songs on the album, so, unless you find it in a bargain-bin, try to find the song somewhere on the net…..

andyfestParticipantJ has said in several interviews that there will be no new material. I’m holding out a slight glimmer of hope that they’ll get along so well it will pull them back into the studio but not at all expecting that.

kracked873Participanta band like dinosaur jr. cant just like get back together and be like "we’re gonna record an album" ESSPEcially with all the tension back in 89, i mean theyve played one show together after a 16 year break, if j just wrote the album (bug style and later dinosaur stuff) then whats that? just a j mascis album, and who knows if it would live up to the 3 albums they put out in the 80s (it prolly wouldnt at least in most peoples eyes) ill bet it wouldnt sound much like the old stuff either.
i believe the pixies are recording an album, but theyve been back together for over a year now… so i guess you gotta just wait and see what happens.. chances are its just a tour or so to promote the re-releases. it also opens windows for future reunion shows/tours/good stuff like that.. but ya never know whats to come.
but i mean if you were gonna record an album.. a year from today.. and you didnt know that you were gonna record that album and someone said "hey man are you gonna record an album?" and youd prolly say "no"

IMMMainecoffKoonParticipantIt would be amazing if J and Lou could come up with some new stuff together.
They’re obviously compatible musically and I always thought it was also obvious that the post Lou Dino stuff, great though a lot of of it is, was missing something. They just need to mellow out and let themselves enjoy playing together but sadly I guess we can be almost certain that it ain’t gonna happen.
Another thing, I’ve always wished J was more of a collaborative kinda guy. I mean, the association with Watt and Kevin Shields seem like missed opportunities, y’know? Sometimes I even think J could use a producer.
God Knows who though!May 9, 2005 at 6:01 pm #109506
AGAPParticipantJ seems pretty definite in all the interviews so far that nothing new is gonna come from this reunion. Not saying I wouldn’t love a new song or two/single, but I can understand why so far the big answer is no. He’s already started recording some new Fog material for next year, Lous just released another solo disc etc etc.
Not sure what you mean by missed opportunities with Watt & Kevin Shields, I don’t see it that way at all, but Hey!
J’s done tons of work with other artists over the years, more recently he produced Des Ark Loose Lips Sink Ships, plays guitar on a couple songs on the new Mark Mulcahy disc, played on a couple tracks on the last Cobra Verde disc & toured with them. Played on the Hanin Elias disc & appeared in the video, did a very cool song with Andy Labreque ‘You can be loved’, has played at some Ammanchi spiritual gatherings…very different than anything he’s done before! He’s played in a couple tribute bands, Lard Zeppelin, The Peasants & a couple more that I can’t remember right now. Can’t wait to here his recent cover of Peter Tosh song!!! Currently he’s playing drums with a local Mass band, he’s also doing a very interesting deal Corecraft with Suzanna Thorpe every now & then
J’s has always seemed to have a clear vision of what he wants his music to be, from early Dinosaur->Dinosaur Jr->J Mascis & The Fog, can’t say I’ve been disappointed at all

stannerParticipantgodd thats a great post!
gotta agree on J the Artiste
one thing most artists have(and a few musicos) is a clear vision of their oevre…he gott it.
looking forward to all and anything from J, the man, the myth, the artist

IMMMainecoffKoonParticipantNicely posted Coma Girl.
OK, I totally take your point. J’s hardly been keeping to himself and yeah, J’s strong, singular vision is what makes his music so wicked, unique and probably peerless.By missed opportunities, let me qualify that by saying that while J has worked with these other great people, I sometimes think I’d love to hear a J Mascis and Mike Watt record, for example. A total collaboration.
Mr Machinery Operator, Ball-Hog, What We Do is Secret etc. all hint at what that might be like. It’s tantalizingly there in my minds ear! Same with the title track of More Light. It’s a total hybrid of My Bloody Valentine and Dinosaur. Gimme more more more, with close-ups, y’know?I think it’s almost inescapable that those things suggest themselves but ultimately, sure, they’re just mind wandering what ifs, fantasy band daydreams. What if Lou had never been thrown out of Dinosaur? How about Dave Schools and Kyle on a J + the Fog studio album?I remember reading an interview with Sonic Youth years ago with Thurston dreaming about getting J and Cher(!?) together. What if Eric Dolphy had lived long enough to record with Albert Ayler?
Et cetera, et cetera… pointless meanderings, I know. Ignore me, I’m full of something stinky.May 10, 2005 at 9:57 am #109509
andyfestParticipantI agree that a collaboration involving J, Watt and Kevin Shields would be nothing short of amazing. Not at all disagreeing with J’s vision being the reason for some amazing music but this would be a killer lineup.
May 10, 2005 at 11:48 am #109510
AGAPParticipantI see your point about the more direct collaborations, the song More Light is one of my fav’s off that disc. If J ever does write/record with Kevin Shields, hope it doesn’t take forever to complete, as a lot of KS projects seem to have no end dates in sight…
I believe J is influenced thru all his different collaborative work & that brings more depth to his songwriting/sound. Last year he did a live show with Doug Martsch & a group of musicians, at the 2nd Don’t Knock The Rock Festival in LA. They came out & played live to a film, all instrumental, played along to the film without much formal structure to the sound…review of the show So he is experimenting with different styles & sounds, hope we get something thrilling with the new Fog material next year.
With you on the Kyle Spence & Dave Schools Fog, would be cool to have them play on the album. J has said that he loves playing with them, even went as far as to say Kyle was the only drummer he knew who was better than him…
thats it for me, road trip time, enjoyed reading your opinions on J’s work…

andyfestParticipantI think it should be pointed out that Kevin Shields did work with J on Hand it Over (or was that More Light?).
