Tuesday, October 8, 2002 — Amherst native J Mascis, who gained international recognition as the frontman of the indie-rock band Dinosaur Jr and whose screaming buzz-saw solos influenced a generation of guitar players, returns to the Iron Horse in Northampton on Thursday for a solo show to promote his new album, "Free So Free."
The 8:30 p.m. show is the second stop on a tour that will take Mascis across the country and end in Los Angeles.

"Free So Free" is Mascis’ third post-Dinosaur Jr album. Recorded at his home in Amherst with some help from members of the Cleveland band Cobra Verde, the music continues the exploration of wild distorted guitar that Mascis has been pursuing since the mid-’80s.

Mascis says he has never considered his songs to be political, or even particularly tied to world events. But one day last September while he was sleeping in a room in New York City, two jets flew into the World Trade Center.

"It was freaky and sad," he said about the terrorist attacks in a telephone interview last week. "The whole thing has made me feel claustrophobic. The government has been using the event to take away our freedoms. They’re now free to do what they want."

"Free So Free" is his reaction to the events of Sept. 11 and what followed.

"It isn’t exactly political," he said. "This is what came out after that day, and I just decided to go with it."

Dinosaur Jr made a name for itself nationally in the late 1980s with two albums, "You’re Living All Over Me" and "Bug." After the band’s breakup, Mascis played drums for friends’ bands, produced albums, had a hand in some sound tracks, appeared in a few films in cameo roles and worked on his solo albums.

"I just play the music I want to listen to," he said last week. "I can’t chase the latest trend and jump on whatever bandwagon is popular. The best you can do, is do what you want to do, and see who out there is willing to listen."

Wow, a sharp political insight by J.
And I totally agree with him. I think Bush is doing the same thing in de UN. He’s putting pressure on the other coutries while HE is the one making the bullshit resolutions. All they (the UN) should be doing is send a few people to Iraq to take away their weapons.
The US are using this situation to make sure they can do whatever they want.
By the way, the senate has agreed on a proposal by Bush, which implies that the US can invade my country (the Netherlands) if there was ever a US soldier to be accused of a crime during war by the International court of justice (or whatever it’s called in english, you know what I’m talking about) in The Hague.

Now, that’s freaky.
