Yes the emotion, but also I think the sense of rhythm – the attacks and retreats and of course they are jazz like in that the solo is always aware of the tune and is playing around it, Any fool can ‘solo’ in a freeform way. Respecting the tune is far harder to do. I also enjoy the ‘solos’ that are mixed down almost to nothing – just audible really

If a solo is not the loudest thing in the mix, is it a solo at all? Or just one of the instruments?
