In about 1988 when they recorded their first John Peel set (Keep the Glove and Thumb are the only two tracks I can remember, although maybe Severed Lips was on too).
Our band had sent our first single into John Peel’s show (we were 14) and were hoping he would play it (he did 2 weeks later).
The year after that they played one of the UK festivals (think it was Reading) and a small tour before that, and I caught them both and have been hooked ever since. The only band that have come near them for me in terms of emotion and raw talent are the Archers of Loaf (Chumming the Ocean is one of the most beautiful songs ever written) and Eric Bachmann’s new band, Crooked Fingers is looking good too.
