Hey RJ, here is my humble take.

I guess it depends on how you define "World War". Because we kind of ARE involved in a world war right now- there are countries that have aligned themselves with us, and countries that have aligned themselves with anti-American forces. So much of the world really is involved. The only thing is that now we don’t call them "wars", we call them "operations". <img>

As far as the economy goes, history has shown that things slump economically during times of war. But I think that nowadays, people can cope with it a little bit better anyway; with the advent of technology, the stock market has swelled thanks to online trading and private investing. It would take more than just one or two scandals or bankruptcies to really cause a substantial crisis. Plus I like to think that there are still some economic incentives and securities around from the Clinton administration.

I don’t think you have to worry about Selective Service knocking on your door just yet, either. As enthusiastic as George W. (like most republicans) is about the military, I’d be willing to bet that he would unleash the nukes before he started recruiting civilians. And as much as our country supposedly is in favor of this war, we are also scrutinizing W’s ability to effectively carry it out. I am certainly not the biggest fan of this administration, but it does seem to be concerned with preserving American lives, particularly those of soldiers. Notice that we have had very few casualties so far. In essence, I think that bringing back the draft is would not only be unnecessary but also reflect very poorly on W.

Tell me, if your dad thinks we are headed for depression, WHY would he want you to be taking out loans to go to college? Why does he think that buying a car and getting a career will insulate you from the impact of a bad economy? That’s the one thing I don’t get. If anything, it will sink you into debt. Not that I’m against getting a car or anything! Just curious.

p.s. about the music website closing; lots of dot-coms were starting to fold/cut back before September 11th. I don’t think there’s much of a specific connection there.
