A friend I met here where I live gave me a CD by a now-believed-to-be-defunct band called Dead Steelmill. They originally hail from the same neighborhood I gew up in in Chicago,IL, USA. The name refers to how the economy of that particular area went from prosperity to poverty in about 5 years due to most of the steelmills in that area closing their doors. Now the area is a urban hellhole with drugs and street gangs amok.

As far as the CD is concerned, Steve Albini produced it. The album was released in 1996 on an label called Wisconsin Steel Records. (Wisconsin Steel was the first and biggest plant to fold up back in the early eighties, by the way). The music is pretty much hardcore punk, (more Minutemen and Black Flag than Korn and Limp. Sorry, Mattman !) and talks about life in the area coping with the fallout. The band has a link on Yahoo, but I think they are not together. If anyone knows more on them and wants to know more, let me know.
