After a blisterning set last night in Brooklyn, NY the band awoke this morning to find that the their trailer had been broken into and all of the gear has been taken.

J's Amma guitar, the mountain man guitar, Lou's Rickenbacker... EVERYTHING IS GONE.
They are still taking inventory to see what else is gone but they were pretty much wiped out.

WE NEED YOUR HELP!!! Spread the word to everyone you know, every music store, pawn shop, club... anywhere you can think they may show up.
If you have ANY information let us know - management@jmascis.com

    Thank you.

The band is driving to Amherst to see if they can get enough gear together to play the scheduled show @ Toads in New Haven, CT but it may have to be cancelled.

    - I just added this to digg to help bring awareness - please digg it so we can get the news out there!!!! -

This has happened to countless other bands (I think in the same area) and no one has caught the jerks yet. This is really fucking sad. If those jerks read this, and laugh, I'll be even more pissed. I'll do what I can on my end.

Stress, this is an ongoing problem in this area (they know it, but when they know you know, it makes a difference)

I'm sure it's been done but get all of the serial numbers into NCIC today.....................plead with the cops, because it gets busy and it is easy to sit on that NCIC paper work for one or two days and not get it into the computers (unless it's a missing person, because it's against the law to sit on that paper work)

ask them how soon can it be put into GCIC. Keep on the dectective handling your case to do a NCIC pawn search.................every few days............................detectives get busy but the victims are the ones who keep their own case active (unless of course it's a murder) but for some stolen music gear, it can get pushed to the bottom of the paper work..........................be nice.................tell them you are really thankful for all of their help in helping you get your gear back.......................bring them some bagles or doughnuts or something.................(I'm not kidding)

Sorry, I know this is heartbreaking but stuff does get found everyday, it does get found!

But... if they see it posted everywhere, they might sit on the gear for a while... I'm pretty sure these are savvy bastards who were salivating all over the thought of pissing people off more than making money off vintage band gear. Unless they had an order.

Sorry to post again but I had another thought.
Find out (start by asking the cops and then move on)
who has video surveillance cameras in the area that may
    have caught anything...................
You can all imagine, that a detective is not going to
go door to door looking for video surveillance for some guitars and such...............
If it were a missing child or a rape, yeah, but not for missing "stuff"
no matter how important it is to you, you have to be your own detective.
Is anyone available to stay a few days in New
York and look into these things?

Oh, Anthony now has something to work with, number ID
Everyone who can, should copy this list of gear and serial numbers

Enlarge it a bit and put in big letters B O L O (be on the look out) on the top of the paper, take it to your local pawn shops, thats how the cops would do it although more and more with the computer these days.
    Stress how thankful you are.
crap, I'm on a lunch break and not focused, if you are not in the state of New York, put stolen out of Long Island City, NY (modified) and the date on the bottom, also a Police department contact phone number on the bottom would be helpful, Anthony do you have that?

I know I'm on the west coast, but I know a Vintage guitar retailer who has a pretty big name within the industry. He's sold J some stuff in the past. I emailed him the list of stuff stolen with the serial numbers. Hopefully he can spread the word through many of the Vintage guitar resellers he knows. I wish there was more I could do......... :-
  • posted the list of gear & contact numbers on the flaming lips, merge & teepee records sites, up on the sonic youth site as well, also emailed pitchforkmedia... :(

hopefully they get the stuff back, gotta be heartbreaking, all those guitars!!!
  • This is so bad, I hope they continue the tour and get the gear back. I posted the list of stuff on the SY forum but seen as I live in England there ain't much I can do :-

great Anthony, If I could change anything I would put the number for the Police Department on there as well,
most pawn people will not call the artist or management in person because on the phone, they just don't know who is who.............you know what I mean?.............is there a contact for the PD in Brooklyn?
If the stuff is found they will need to call the PD anyway to confirm this as a hit, unless they have computers, I'm sorry to say in Athens, our pawn system is still not on computer so it is PDF file print out and hand delivered and followed up with a phone call to confirm a hit, just like most of you can do, but NYC, I bet ya' they are on top of the technology.

  • Does anybody know if J got that pedal back that got stolen in Scotland? That seems like nothing now compared to this and does anybody know if Lou has used that Rickenbacker since '85. It would be a real shame if he has had it all these years and doesn't get it back

I think the bass was in J's possession this whole time.
There was also a Black Heavy Metal Warlock looking bass at the shows that was not played.
  • So it's actaully J's not Lou's? weird, i always pictured Lou being buried with it.... i didnt really

  • the Rickenbacker is Lou's. The "Warlock" bass was bought as a backup by J last fall. Not that it matters now, I guess.

Added the info to swervedriver, guitar world, Harmony Central & slap skateboard forums. Anyone hooked up with any guitar forums...please add the info, those guitars need to be found!!!

I read that Lou tried to sell the Rickenbacker and bass-amp after a Sebadoh show in NYC, back in 1990 or 1991. When I interviewed him last year he told me he gave it to a friend in NY and that he was really excited when he asked his friend to get it back for the reunion and how surprised he was to get that original gear back. Damn, I wish he'll get it back this time !
  • "deepsIush " said:

How's J doing? It must be pretty devastating, I hope he doesn't attack anyone in New Haven tonight in anger.

I guess J was doing OK. Having his wife there w/ him probably helped. They are probably in Amherst right now getting shit together. Lou has a friend coming down from Westfield w/ a bass that was at his parents' house. He's apparently not all that broken up about losing the bass as he had just gotten it back before the reunion.

The rest of them finally left Brooklyn about 30 minutes ago so it'll be a huge PITA to deal w/ rush hour traffic.
  • the message is definitely getting out there, Jonathon Cohen mentioned the Dino robbery in a current Lemonheads article on billboard...

In related news, Dinosaur Jr. was victimized by a thief last night (Aug. 29) while its trailer was parked outside a hotel in Long Island City, N.Y. Among the items stolen were several guitars, a pedal board, cymbals and a Rickenbacker bass. Anyone with information about the incident is asked to contact Brian Schwartz at 303-998-0001 or Bart Dahl at 212-777-0922.

This is really shitty. I guess I'll just post this all over the internet, since there's not much else I can do.
  • That really sucks to be sure. But everyone will be fine. Gear can be replaced. Although there is the sentimentality attached to their instruments. But in all honesty, the band will recover. And Im sure the people who stole that stuff will be found and prosecuted. Rest assured, Dinosaur Jr will go on.

Some of you people are taking this way too seriously. "I think Im going to cry"? Come on. I can understand if that was all of YOUR gear and it was all you had and you would be out thousands of dollars if you weren't able to play shows for a while and they were all the instruments you owned. But J has more guitars and pedals, Lou has more basses and Murph still has his drums and cymbols are easily replaced. Nothing incredibly bad will come from this. Unless the band and the cops and the theives get into some crazy shootout/car chase and everyone dies in a bloody car crash and the paramedics find the bands' eviscerated, bullet riddled bodies. Now THAT would be tragic.

Looks like the news is travelling around the world! Not sure how much us folk in England can help!? But it certainly highlights the theft.
Which will hopefully help catch the thieving bastards!

sonicdeathmonkey, I would have to ask "What do you do for a living?" although stuff can be replaced and ultimately one has to be at peace with this fact........

When one has experienced this sort of theft, one that relates to your livelihood (ie: your way of keeping the roof over your head and food on the table, property taxes paid, the electricity on and the cell phones working) the general feeling is one of extreme violation.

i just read this on another forum, terrible news both for the band and for the people who might not get to see upcoming shows :( >:( this is getting to be a regular occurrence unfortunately - wasn't it camper van beethoven who had same thing happen last year? hopefully the dino equipment is distinctive enough that it will be recognized...crossing my fingers.

Well I can't help but to sort of agree with Sonicdeathmonkey. As much as I hope that the gear will be returned instantly, as much as this really fucking sucks, as much as J and the guys must be pissed off and sad... it's only gear (no matter how impossible to replace identically) and the band with all its members can go on playing/creating music... there are so many extreme violations happening in the world that are of even less reversible kinds... anyway, hope the efforts will help to bring the stuff back.

  • tons of stories out there today about the robbery, my fav article title so far...

    BASTARDS Stole Dinosaur Jr's Equipment!!!-staticmedia.com

    Rolling Stone had this blurb...
Dinosaur Jr.’s gear was recently stolen out of the band’s van parked outside their hotel in Long Island City. The saddest part is how, in the press release (excerpts from which appear after the jump,) they describe the missing guitars like lost puppies. Won’t someone bring those Fender Jazzmasters home?

Hope they get the stuff back!

Somebody needs to start offering security firm services to bands playing that area who need their gear vans guarded overnight.
