I have had it in my head to put together a virtual album (or two) of Dinosaur covers for a while and just wondered if you guys had any interest.
It would be in the vain of what they do @ FrankBlack.net - http://frankblack.net/tribute/

It would consist of you, your band or anyone else we can find doing dino covers (as long as we have the OK to offer them) all in one place and ready to burn. We could promote the bands & artists doing it with links to their sites and a brief bio.

Anthony had a few up at FreeSoFree a while back and I thought a good bit of they were very good. It would be interesting to hear those that are pretty dead on covers as well as original takes on them (like the old techno version of the wagon that was out there from some Japanese band some time back - I'll try to dig it up).

Maybe even inspired tracks (ones you think would make a good dinosaur song) could be in there - I'll post a few Jabber & Govelou songs in the couple of days to show you what I mean.

Anyway - is there any interest in this?

for starters - here are some mp3s of other artists dong their take on dino tunes
Joan of Arc doing a live cover of The Wagon (not great quality)
Belle and Sebastian doing a live cover of Freak Scene
Built to Spill - Tarpit (live acoustic) - also available in shn format
Blink 182 - Freak Scene (demo)....

other bands (not included here) that come to mind where Cowboy Junkies - The post, Fireside - Sludgefeast, Juliana Hatfield - Raisans & Severed Lips....

of course, we would make it something more formal with some cover art and such incase you want to burn them or whatever.

Summerskiss.com an afghan whigs site did the same thing, and got fans to do covers of their favorite Afghan whigs songs. I haven't heard the result but its definately a cool idea.

I'd be down to throw something together, it would give me a chance to get better aquanted with my new home recording gear.

I'm sure there are probably lots of folks around here who would be interested.

Oh and thanks for the Tarpit link, I've always wanted to hear it but could never find it. ;)

Didn't ammaringnyc's band cover a couple of tunes ? I definetely think they should be on there, if he's up for it.

Yeah I figured Ammarings band would be into it, as well as Randy Jane, Alicemudgarden might want to do something, sfbarker's band might be down. There is definately enough talent around here to pull it off.

I guess if there is enough of a response we should start listing the songs we want to cover so we don't have any multiple recordings of the same song. I don't know, it's Jerimiahs call. Theres plenty of good songs to go around.

Sweet, lets get a list going of who wants to do what songs. Is there a deadline date you would like to have these by Jerimiah?

what do you guys think about shooting for early May?

If someone gets so ambitious to do a whole album, feel free - we will gladly host it. YLAOM end to end? ;P It all sounds pretty cool to me.

Here are the Jabber & Govelou tunes I mentioned in the first post.

I don't know much about them and this is all I could dig up.

The only reference I can find is this: http://biphome.spray.se/mattias77/TEAM.HTML">http://biphome.spray.se/mattias77/TEAM.HTML
Bob (BobJohnson - http://www.freakscene.net/smf/index.php?action=profile;u=199">http://www.freakscene.net/smf/index.php ... file;u=199) & John (if they are different people) used to post on the boards
    http://www.freakscene.net/smf/index.php/topic,725.0.html">http://www.freakscene.net/smf/index.php ... 725.0.html

    http://www.freakscene.net/smf/index.php/topic,1127.0.html">http://www.freakscene.net/smf/index.php ... 127.0.html

John used to maintain http://www.fingerfarda.com/john/">http://www.fingerfarda.com/john/ but he has not responded at that email.

Never heard anything from mustachinsanity but the influences sound interesting

Anyway, these tunes have an OBVIOUS influence and if I remember correctly, they had pictures of J on the cover of the cd along with cartoon drawings. A few folks on the old dinosaur jr mailing list were convinced J was playing on there at one point. They are catchy tunes although the quality of the mp3s are not so much.

Now for the tracks - Jabber & Govelou
    Been Alone
    Drivin
    On the Fish

I'll send out an email to all the forum members & people that have signed up @ jmascis.com later today. Being that I put this under site suggestions, a lot of people probably have not seen it.

Ideally, I would LOVE to get enough material for a couple (virtual) cd releases.

Also, what do you guys thing about extending it to inspired artwork & videos as well?

Can I go for either little furry things or in a jar?

oh well, I'd do it on elecric, it doesnt really matter. If i do in a jar, that would only be guitar not bass, so if anoyne wants to add, okay.

I finished my Tarpit cover this weekend. Just need to save it as an MP3. Hopefully I can upload it to Free so free sometime within the next couple of days. I'm stoked on it, I changed it up a bit but it still sounds like a Dinosaur Jr tune. Can't wait for everyone to hear it. :)
